Daisy Buchanan- Analysis

The golden girl is a popular and successful young woman who everyone wants to be friends or even alliances with. Through out the novel the main golden girl is Daisy but Jordan can defiantly fit in this category as well. We come to relise that Daisy isn’t actually that kind or caring inside even though she is the ultimate ‘it girl’.

Explain how Daisy could be considered clever.

Daisy is a clever girl and very well educated. She keeps this to her self though because in the 1920’s a pretty girl will do much better than a smart girl. She uses her reputation in a very clever way even though it may not be kind. She has everyone wrapped round he little finger but deep down she knows it will never work out. This is like with Gatsby, she loves the thought of running away with him and enjoys his company while it lats but she knows her self that she’s leading him on and it will never work out!

Gatsby views Daisy as a possession to be collected.

The men talk about Daisy as if she is an object that they wish they had and as if she wasn’t there. They make it sound like they just want her for the reputation and they don’t actually care. When ever people refer to daisy they are always only ever focus on her voice, beauty and money. Gatsby mentions that Daisy’s voice is full of money. To men Daisy is something you want to win and be able to say I’ve dated her or I know her.

Describe what life was like in the 1920’s for women. After you have done so, explain why you think Daisy wants her daughter to be a ‘fool’ in this world.

In the 1920’s society didn’t really approve of successful women. Women were always forced to stay at home and take care of the family and house hold, and when they did get jobs they were always the smaller and not as useful ones.

Daisy wants her daughter to be a fool because she believes it will be easier for her daughter if she is un-aware of the brutal shame of being a woman and the negativness that comes with it. She wants her child to enjoy life and it’s hard to do that if you are aware of the limitations are of being a woman.

careless people…they smashed up things and creatures, and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made…”.

Daisy tends to go around and not just break physically things but break people’s lives and hearts. Daisy clearly breaks Myrtle and George Wilson. Nick also gets broken emotionally after spending so much time with Daisy. He ends up broken from the summer that he spent in the life of NYC specifically with Tom and Daisy. She never stops to fix anything and an example of this is Gatsby’s life in this case Nick is left to tidy everything up.

Explain how Daisy could be considered ‘amoral’.

Daisy doesn’t care about anyone else and always leaves without completing her dirty work. Her morals are very low and she has no awareness of being kind to others, sometimes even towards her friends and family. She is highly shown to be amoral never owns up to Myrtle’s death which then cause the death of both Gatsby and Wilson.
