Dictatorship:
In the novel, Animal Farm by George Orwell dictatorship is a significant idea and is shown strongly by the farm leader Napolean. The first point that made Napolean a successful dictator was that he built up his power over time rather than implementing it straight away. The second is he always had his loyal supporters, to have a strong dictator you need loyal supporters, again he did this by building his followers up over time. The last thing Napoleon did to become a successful dictator was he got the other pigs to go round the farm talking highly of him, this way he could receive more attention and gain peoples votes and get them to agree with him.
Napolean didn’t start as a dictator but built up his power over time. This relates to the Russian revolution when Joseph Stalin served his time as a dictator. He didn’t become one quickly but gained peoples votes over time and then became a strong dictator once he was voted in. You could say Napolean turned to the opposite if what he was at the start. He firstly says “four legs good, two legs bad” but ends up saying, “four legs good, two legs better.” This shows he changed immensely through the novel. In my opinion, I think Napolean definitely changed for the worst and gets crueller and crueller throughout his role as the farm leader.
Napolean’s supporters strongly helped him throughout his dictatorship. Without them, he would not have been able to even gain leadership of the farm or control the animals if they didn’t trust him. He did this by again gaining their trust over time. For example, if it weren’t for the sheep, Napolean would have never been able to win the arguments against Snowball. He got the sheep to simply chant, “four legs good, two legs bad.” This didn’t allow snowball to ever give his opinion. He convinced the animals that he is always right and that they should take his evil advice. This is strongly shown in Boxers quote, “Napolean is always right!” If Boxer had not believed in Napolean then I don’t think any of the animals would have as they of thought Boxer as their big brother as he was always the kindest and most hardworking.
Squealer played a huge part of Napolean’s take over just as all the other pigs did. Squealer would always convince the animals that Napolean is “always right” and talk him up on things that he didn’t deserve. For example when Napolean changed one of the commandments, “no animal shall sleep in a bed.” Squealer strongly suggested that the commandment had always been “No animal shall sleep in a bed, with sheets.” They changed this when the pigs moved into the farmhouse and started sleeping in beds, without sheets. I think Squealer played a huge part in Napolean’s dictatorship and he would have been nowhere near as successful without Squealers convincing and sneaky ways.
All of these points show that although Napolean was a successful and powerful dictator he would not have been at all this if it weren’t for the other animals on the farm and his smart mind. Napoleon’s way of leadership, a dictatorship, was very effective and even though evil, probably the best system for the farm.
